Daisy

Daisy

I have been experimenting with flowers, something I have not really photographed at any great length before. This was just flowering in our back garden at home so I took a crack at it. It is actually a yellow daisy and to be honest I didn't like the natural colours in the photograph so it was desaturated and a blue / grey tint added after some cropping in CS4.

Tech stuff 1/500th sec exposure @ ISO 1600, Pentax K100D S, 55mm f5.6 on Pentax DA lens.

Finally, I keep getting asked 'what is the best camera to take pictures with?' and many questions along those lines. In truth it doesn't matter if you use a pin hole camera, a box brownie or £10 000 worth of kit. It is never the camera that makes a 'good' picture, it is almost always the person behind the camera. Pick up a camera and get out there shooting, apply a little technique and thought and you will be creating great shots in no time.

What you see, should be what you get!

How do you get your printer to match what is shown on your monitor / screen? I have been asked this question twice this week and a few times over the last month or so, so I'll try my best to answer it. I splashed out recently and bought a screen calibrator (less than £100). This means my photos will appear on any of my computer screens in the house with the same colours, cast and brightness etc. It also means any publishing house or printing company should see the same or very very similar, as all their screens will be calibrated too. I have my camera set to Adobe RGB colour setting (usually only found on DSLR's) as this is a common standard and I can set Photoshop to work at that setting. My printer was a bit more hit and miss however, without splashing out £350+ on a printer calibration system. I run test strips of a basic test print (many versions available online) showing a good selection of tones and colours, shades and contrasts etc. Very similar to what I used to do in my darkroom, allowing me to adjust the printer settings (colours, saturation, brightness etc) to match the paper in use. I then save this profile and use it everytime I use that particular ink / paper setup. I have a different setting for each type of paper I have, but it is the only way I can be confident that the print will match how I visualise the picture on my screen.
